Cyber Security for Small Businesses: Key Takeaways from the Long Eaton Chamber of Trade Event

On October 1st, the Long Eaton Chamber of Trade hosted an incredibly informative session featuring John Richardson from Champagnewebs. John delivered an interesting talk on cyber security for small businesses.

The key message: Cyber criminals aren’t targeting you specifically. They’re trying millions of doors, looking for unlocked ones. These simple steps lock yours — and make them move on to someone else.

Passwords

  • Use three random words (e.g., “CoffeeLadderMountain”)
  • Different password for each important account
  • Consider a password manager or notebook at home
  • Don’t share passwords — one person, one login

Email Scams

  • Check the sender’s actual email address
  • Hover over links before clicking
  • Watch for urgency and threats – red flags!
  • When in doubt, don’t click

Bank Details Scam

• If ANYONE asks to change payment details:
ALWAYS call to confirm
• Use a number you already have — never from the email
• Make this a rule in your business

Phone & Text Scams

Hang up, find the real number, call back
• Microsoft, HMRC, your bank never cold-call
• Watch for “Hi Mum” scams –always verify

Phones & Tablets

• Use a screen lock (PIN, fingerprint, face)
Keep the device updated
• Only download from official app stores
• Avoid sensitive tasks on public Wi-Fi

Social Media

• Pet names, birthdays make terrible passwords
• “Fun quizzes” harvest security answers
• Check your privacy settings

Backups

• Copy files to USB stick or drive weekly
• Keep one copy away from premises
• Or use cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox)
Test your backups occasionally!

Updates

• Set devices to update automatically overnight
• Updates fix security holes – don’t ignore them!

If Something Goes Wrong

Don’t panic!
Disconnect from the internet
Change passwords from a different device
Call your bank immediately if money involved
Report to Action Fraud: 0300 123 2040
Ask for help – there’s no shame in it

Remember:

You don’t have to be unhackable. You just have to be harder to fool than the next person.
